William S. Spears has built a distinguished career at the intersection of entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, and philanthropy. His story began not with a business plan, but with a problem that others believed could not be solved.
As a trustee of the Wichita Falls Independent School District nearly four decades ago, Spears faced a fundamental challenge: the district needed to expand air conditioning throughout its 33 schools, but projected utility costs threatened to place a significant strain on its budget. Rather than accept higher costs as inevitable, Spears challenged conventional thinking. Drawing on proven business principles and his longstanding interest in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, he developed a disciplined approach centered on measurement, accountability, and human behavior.
The result was remarkable. The district tripled its air-conditioning load while reducing electricity costs in the first year. What began as an effort to solve a local school district’s financial challenge became the nation’s first behavioral-based energy conservation program and launched Spears’ career as an entrepreneur in energy management. In 1986, he founded Energy Education, now Cenergistic.
Under Spears’ leadership and vision, Cenergistic evolved from a pioneering concept into a national enterprise serving more than 1,500 organizations and more than 25,000 facilities. Its clients have included school districts, colleges and universities, healthcare organizations, churches, businesses, and public entities. By combining expert people, actionable data, technology, and disciplined execution, the company has helped organizations reduce energy consumption and redirect savings toward the people and missions they serve. Cenergistic has been awarded Partner of the Year or Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Winner by the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® Program for 16 straight years and is the EPA’s most active Service and Product Provider for ENERGY STAR building certifications
For Spears, however, entrepreneurship has never been solely about building a company. It has been about developing people, challenging established assumptions, and creating lasting opportunities for others. His commitment to business education and developing future leaders is reflected in his transformative support of both Oklahoma State University and Southern Methodist University. In 2004, Spears made what was then the largest academic gift in Oklahoma State University’s history, providing funding for faculty chairs, fellowships, scholarships, and endowments. In recognition of his transformative generosity, OSU renamed its College of Business Administration the William S. Spears School of Business. Nearly two decades later, Spears made a landmark gift to SMU’s Cox School of Business that established the William S. Spears Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership, empowering students, supporting faculty pursuits, and bringing entrepreneurial expertise to the North Texas business community.
Spears’ own education reflects the breadth of his commitment to business leadership. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University, an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctorate of Business Administration from the Wayne Huizenga Graduate School of Business and Entrepreneurship.
His commitment to service has been equally enduring. Spears served the Wichita Falls Independent School District as trustee, board secretary, board vice president, and chairman of its facilities committee. Throughout his career, he has provided leadership to numerous nonprofit, civic, educational, healthcare, and financial organizations. He founded the Christian Businessmen’s Committee of Wichita Falls and Times Publishing Company Charities and has served organizations including Ford’s Theatre, the American Cancer Society, Young Life, the Boy Scouts of America, and the University of Texas Medical School.
Spears’ legacy is ultimately defined by a philosophy that has guided him throughout his career: challenge the status quo, look beyond the obvious, and create a better way forward. From transforming the way organizations manage energy to investing in entrepreneurs and business leaders, he has demonstrated how disciplined innovation and purposeful leadership can turn an unlikely idea into an enduring legacy.
