What’s one key decision or moment that shaped your career?

Phillip Huffines: 1991 – Quit working for my father and joined my brother to start Huffines Communities.

How do you approach mentoring the next generation of leaders?

Phillip Huffines: Ask them many questions – Try to make them curious about money, wealth, deals – when/what makes them passionate – create a true sense of urgency.

How has giving back to the community influenced your leadership and your approach to business?

Phillip Huffines: I’ve learned that most young people are not exposed during childhood or as adults to entrepreneurship, business, budgets, profits, and different aspects of capitalism. In my business and my leadership with team members, because of my experience with J.A. I have more patience with better communication with team members. Through the Huffines Foundation, I empower young people to learn STEM, financial literacy, and skills for innovation. Goal is to prepare Texas students for success by competitions, financial learning modules, scholarships, and school districts partnerships. www.huffinesfellowship.com

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?

Phillip Huffines: Napolean Hil – Think and Grow Rich – Taught me that “dedicated purpose with a true sense of urgency” – everyday – and all day will create success. “One (You) may not be the smartest in the room but by golly no one can out work you” Tenacity will create success.

If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Phillip Huffines: Stay focused on the goal – be clearer on the goals – do not get in a rut – attack each day with vigor – then “smell the roses” don’t be so hard on yourself

What are you most excited about for the future of Dallas and its business community?

Phillip Huffines: Dallas/ Fort Worth is the fastest-growing metro in the country because of its attitude. The personality of the city is “quite go-time let’s make this happen.” I’m excited to be a volunteer with J.A., planting entrepreneurial seeds throughout Dallas, because these seeds will grow and spark creativity, confidence, success, and wealth/ The best part is that the new growth of this spirit will create more seeds and so on. The success of one will manifest success of many.
